The revelation occurred when it was determined that immersing Blackthorn fruit in gin and including sugar resulted in the creation of a highly enjoyable beverage, thus giving rise to the inception of Sloe Gin. Plymouth Sloe Gin, derived from a recipe dating back to 1883, has emerged as a significant component in a range of traditional drinks, most notably the renowned Sloe Gin fizz.

Over the course of about four months, sloe berries are gradually and delicately infused with Plymouth gin, along with the addition of pure Dartmoor water and a small amount of sugar. The sugar content is intentionally minimized to enhance the prominent flavor profile of the berries and to emphasize the significant contribution of the fruit’s dry acidity to the overall taste experience. The outcome is a completely unadulterated product devoid of any supplementary flavorings or colorants.

The infusion process imparts a deep crimson hue to Sloe Gin, endowing it with a visually striking appearance. The outcome is a refined liqueur flavor characterized by a harmonious blend of sweet and bitter fruit notes, complemented by a subtle almond undertone derived from the fruit’s stone.
